New Zealand Skilled Migrant Pathway: Eligibility, Points & Process for Professionals

 May 15, 2025  |   By Admin

Thinking about moving to New Zealand as a skilled professional? The New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) can provide a pathway to residence for eligible professionals, skilled workers, tradespeople and technicians who have the skills New Zealand needs.

The current Skilled Migrant Category has three pathways: the Points-based pathway, Skilled Work Experience pathway, and Trades and Technician pathway. Each route has different eligibility requirements, so understanding which pathway matches your qualifications and experience is essential.

For professionals considering New Zealand immigration from India, this guide explains how the Skilled Migrant pathway works, who may qualify, how the points system works, what role a New Zealand job offer plays, and what you should know before starting your application.

Important: New Zealand immigration requirements can change. Always check the latest requirements with Immigration New Zealand before making an application.

What Is the New Zealand Skilled Migrant Category?

The Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa is a residence pathway for people who have skills that are needed in New Zealand.

If you meet the requirements, the visa can allow you to live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely. You may also be able to include your partner and dependent children aged 55 years or younger in your application, subject to the applicable requirements.

The current system is designed to recognise different types of skilled migrants rather than relying on one single qualification or occupation route.

You may potentially qualify based on:

  • Your recognised qualification
  • Your New Zealand occupational registration
  • Your income or salary
  • Your skilled work experience
  • Your eligible trade or technician occupation
  • Your New Zealand employment

However, meeting one of these conditions alone does not automatically make you eligible. You must satisfy the requirements of one of the three Skilled Migrant Category pathways and meet the general visa requirements.

What Are the 3 New Zealand Skilled Migrant Pathways?

The current Skilled Migrant Category provides three routes to residence:

1. Points-Based Pathway

The Points-based pathway is designed for applicants who can claim 6 skilled resident points from their qualification, occupational registration or income, with eligible New Zealand skilled work experience potentially providing additional points.

2. Skilled Work Experience Pathway

This pathway is intended for people who have developed their skills primarily through professional work experience.

Under the current requirements, applicants generally need:

  • A qualifying job or job offer in New Zealand
  • An eligible ANZSCO skill level 1–3 occupation
  • Pay meeting the applicable Skilled Migrant Category wage threshold
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience in an ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 occupation
  • An additional 2 years of skilled work experience in New Zealand in an ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 occupation paid at least 1.1 times the SMC wage threshold

Additional requirements can apply to occupations on the Amber List. Certain occupations, including ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5 roles and occupations on the Red List, are not eligible for this pathway.

3. Trades and Technician Pathway

The Trades and Technician pathway is designed for eligible professionals working in specified trade and technical occupations.

To be eligible for the Trades and Technician pathway, you must:

  • work in an eligible trades and technician occupation paid at least the SMC wage threshold
  • have a relevant qualification that is level 4, comparable to level 4, or higher than level 4 on the NZQCF
  • have at least 2.5 years of relevant, post-qualification work experience in an ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 occupation, and
  • have an additional 1.5 years of post-qualification, skilled work experience in New Zealand paid at least the SMC wage threshold.

How Does the New Zealand Skilled Migrant Points System Work?

One of the most common questions from professionals is: How many points are needed for New Zealand skilled migration?

For the Points-based pathway, you need 6 skilled resident points.

You can claim between 3 and 6 points from one of the following skill categories:

  • Qualification
  • New Zealand occupational registration
  • Income

If you cannot obtain all 6 points from your primary category, you may be able to add up to 3 points from eligible skilled work experience in New Zealand.

Importantly, you cannot simply combine points from different primary skill categories. For example, qualification points cannot be combined with income points. Instead, you select one skill category and may supplement it with eligible New Zealand skilled work experience where permitted.

Example

A professional with a recognised qualification may be able to claim qualification points and then use eligible skilled work experience in New Zealand to reach the required 6 points.

Similarly, someone with qualifying occupational registration or a sufficiently high income may be able to claim points through that category.

Your exact points position depends on the qualification, registration, income and work experience you can prove.

Do You Need a Job Offer in New Zealand?

Yes, employment is an important part of the current Skilled Migrant Category.

To apply, you generally need to be working for or have a job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer, and the position must meet the applicable requirements.

This is why skilled migration planning should involve more than simply checking whether your occupation is in demand.

You should also consider:

  • Whether your prospective employer is accredited
  • Whether the role is considered skilled
  • Whether your salary meets the relevant threshold
  • Whether your job aligns with your claimed qualification or experience
  • Whether the role meets the requirements of your selected pathway

For professionals applying from India, securing an appropriate New Zealand employment opportunity can therefore be a significant part of the overall immigration strategy.

What Is the Skilled Migrant Category Wage Threshold?

The Skilled Migrant Category uses wage thresholds to determine whether employment and work experience meet the applicable skilled requirements.

You must be paid at least the SMC wage threshold:

  • in your current job or job offer, and
  • during your skilled work experience in New Zealand (if your pathway requires this).

The SMC wage threshold that applies to you depends on the pathway you are applying under. For some pathways, it also depends on when you started gaining skilled work experience in New Zealand.

These thresholds are based on the New Zealand median wage and are updated periodically. The threshold that applies can depend on the pathway and, in some situations, when the applicant began gaining skilled work experience in New Zealand.

This is an important area to check carefully because salary requirements can affect whether your New Zealand employment counts toward your pathway.

Rather than relying on an old immigration blog or outdated salary figure, applicants should verify the current threshold directly with Immigration New Zealand.

Can Indian Professionals Apply for New Zealand Skilled Migration?

Yes. Indian professionals can potentially apply for New Zealand skilled residence if they meet the relevant immigration requirements.

Professionals from India may come from a wide range of backgrounds, including:

  • Information technology
  • Engineering
  • Healthcare
  • Finance and accounting
  • Construction
  • Education
  • Skilled trades
  • Technical occupations
  • Management and professional services

However, your job title alone does not determine eligibility.

Your actual duties, qualifications, work experience, salary, occupation classification, employment and supporting evidence can all matter when assessing a potential pathway.

This is particularly important when qualifications and employment experience were obtained outside New Zealand.

Do Overseas Qualifications Need to Be Assessed?

In some cases, applicants with overseas qualifications may need an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) before submitting an Expression of Interest.

Immigration New Zealand specifies when an IQA is required and provides exemptions for certain qualifications. The current rules also contain specific evidence requirements for some qualifications.

For an applicant from India, this means it is worth reviewing your degree, diploma, transcripts and other educational documents early in the process.

Preparing qualification evidence at the beginning can help you avoid unnecessary delays later.

What Is the New Zealand Skilled Migrant Application Process?

Although your exact process depends on your pathway, the Skilled Migrant Category generally follows these stages:

Step 1: Assess Your Eligibility

Start by identifying which of the three SMC pathways may fit your circumstances.

Consider your:

  • Age
  • Occupation
  • Qualification
  • Professional registration
  • Salary
  • Work experience
  • New Zealand employment
  • English ability
  • Health and character
Step 2: Secure a Qualifying Job or Job Offer

You generally need to be working for or have a qualifying job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer.

Step 3: Prepare Your Evidence

Gather relevant documents, including qualification evidence, employment records, salary information, identity documents and other evidence required for your pathway.

Step 4: Submit an Expression of Interest

Eligible applicants submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). Immigration New Zealand assesses the information provided, and applicants who meet the requirements can proceed to the next stage.

Step 5: Apply for Residence

After receiving an invitation to apply, you submit the residence application and provide the required supporting evidence.

The application must demonstrate that you genuinely meet the requirements of the pathway you are claiming.

What Are the Common Mistakes Applicants Make?

Skilled migration applications can become complicated when applicants rely on assumptions rather than checking the precise requirements.

Common mistakes include:

  • Using outdated points information
  • Assuming any New Zealand job qualifies
  • Misunderstanding the wage threshold
  • Claiming points incorrectly
  • Failing to verify qualification requirements
  • Providing incomplete employment evidence
  • Choosing the wrong skilled residence pathway
  • Assuming an occupation is eligible without checking the current rules

Immigration rules can change, so information published several years ago may no longer accurately describe the current system.
